"Mom June," she said, "I need
medicine for my baby. She has a fever."
This was a common refrain.
It was sad that so many of the women here in this part of the
Philippines had so little resources. Most requests came
from a "squatters relocation area" where the opportunities to
prosper are far and few between. The women there have a
lot of children and little time for anything outside the home.
The husbands feel blessed to be able to put food on the table
most of the time... extra cash is not common.
In the beginning, Mom June would
give what she could and feel bad she could do no more.
However, as time went on and she kept praying about it, she got
the idea she would find some way for these poor women to earn
something. June's cross-stitch projects were the
result. They would relieve some of the need and
give the women something to feel good about as well.
At first there were just simple
patterns of flowers Bible Verses and so on that could be made
into greeting cards. Later Bible Covers and book bags were
done. Finally Mom June designed a way to make REVERSIBLE
CROSS-STITCH BOOMARKS which you will find no where else on
The women found a way to put some
eggs and meat in their family's diet and other things that are a
blessing. More than that, these women were making
something beautiful. One lady one day said, "Mom June,
even if you don't pay me I will make cross-stitch because it is
so pretty." There is not much "pretty" in the lives of
most of these women.
Bottom line, YOU can encourage
Mom June and some of these women by buying bookmarks, Bible
covers, bags, and greeting cards made by these women. They
are NOT expensive and the work is ALWAYS excellent. Go to
